Do you curl in or out? Should it all be in one direction? Do you clamp at the top or bottom of the hair, and is all of it clamped or do you just clamp on one end and wrap the rest with your hand and hold it?

I'm finding it hard to find what is best.

First of all the difference between curling in and curling out are how they frame the face. When you curl your hair in it wraps around your face and neck, when curling your hair out you almost "brighten" and widen your face. In my opinion curling inward is for more of a classic look, elegant Hollywood. I would say try clamping the 1 inch section of hair in the middle hold it there for a second then continue releasing the clamp until you are at the end of the hair strand and all the hair is wrapped around the curling iron. Also it helps to spray a heat protect on your hair before you start and a hairspray when done. Good Luck! Hope I was helpful!

Well, there are lots of different ways to use a curling iron in order to get the results you want. I usually clamp at the middle, wind once or twice, unclamp and pull down to the ends, clamp and then wind back up to the roots. Thats how I get perfect spirals.
If I'm going to a tossled beachy sort of look, I'll wrap the hair around the curling iron with my hand and forgo the clamp.
No matter what look I'm going for, I alternate curling in and out, so the hair doesn't all go in one direction. In less of course I'm using the iron to turn the ends in or out. Most of the time I'm holding the iron perpendicular to my head, with the hot part facing up.

If you have one of those blow dryer things, one of the long ones with the brisles (sp?) on them like they use in salons, they work best. just curl the ends of your hair in all different directions with it. Just go from about the tip of your hair to about 4 inches up.. and curl that much. Leave it on the dryer for about 10 seconds. That is what i do and it always works perfect.. but curl little peices at a time.. every peice in different directions.. it looks so pretty! I dont know what type of hair you have though.. mine is long and thin, and thats what works best for my type of hair!
