Well, look at the definition of the religion. Religion is the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals that generally involve a faith in a spiritual nature and a study of inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom related to understanding human life. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to faith as well as to the larger shared systems of belief.

In the larger sense, religion is a communal system for the coherence of belief—typically focused on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, traditions, and rituals are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion can also be described as a way of life.
It doesn't necessarily involved God or something similar. I mean Buddha is not a God, but there is Buddhism, right. It is a philosophy. So is Atheism.

It's only Christians and people who don't understand not having a religion that refer to atheism as a religion.

They think it's like not having a head or something. Completely beyond their understanding.

Sad, really.

There are atheists who are anti-realists. See David Hume.

Not all religions are theistic. Certain traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism are non-theistic.

Atheism is not a religion, but it can be studied as one and generally is, philosophically sociologically, and historically.

Peace!
You can say atheism is a religion because it takes great faith to believe in what they believe. In that sense they are a religion. They do not believe in God but they believe in their capacity to transcend themselves. In other words, they also have a god - themselves.
That's why they are ... because they subconsciously think they are gods.

they think it is a religion because atheists are "religious" in what they believe... they just say it's religion because they want it to look bad... since all religions look bad against another different religions, they want to drag us in their mudhole.

you dont need a religion if you are religious in what you do... for example, is it a religion to cross stitch?
