I got a traffic ticket, but the paperwas ripped off in the part that describes waht the offense is. Can I get it dismissed based on that?

what wording would you use if you defended this yourself before a judge?

I don't know what state you are in, but likely the answer is no. The best you are likely to get is a continuance. You have a right to be informed of the charges against you and to face your accusers, both of which are implicated in your situation. However, the solution is too easy: if the court has a record of the offense (their copy probably is not ripped) then they will just tell you and give you whatever extra time (probably a month at most) that you need to prepare your defense.

However, if you really want it dismissed, just show up for court. Cops flake on their traffic court appearances about half the time, resulting in a default win for the defendant.

I love it when people say cops that don't show up for court will dismiss you of all charges in traffic court. This is not TRUE at all. If your ticket or crime is significant enough, or the judge is having a bad day. He can assign your plea to another day, and subpoena the officer on behalf of the courts defense.

Obviously in your case, rather then fess up and admit you were wrong you would rather cheat the system because you don't need a notification on a paper to tell you, look you messed up for speeding as an example. It is only important that the court has the officers portion of the offense and your signature on the carbon piece. So when you go up there and plead not guilty with explanation to the judge and say your ticket was ripped, please post a a follow up with his reply to you LOL!

Another thing to realize is, if what you were thinking would be remotely true, how many people would just start ripping tickets in half and wanting tickets dismissed LMAO.
