It can't be to become a believer, because you dismiss any evidence presented as garbage, you dismiss the Bible as fiction, and you dismiss religion altogether. Again, I am typing this so you can't know the degree of sincerity in which I ask. I don't mean any offense. Just curious.

I might only add that the only reason I can fathom that you are here is to "convert" the converted to disbelief. To bring 'em around to your side. To do something that the majority of you belittle, berate, and chastise others for doing to you. In the Christian's defense, it's their responsibility to convert the non-believer, as they are commanded by God as so many of them believe. All of this is known going in. Their agenda is no secret, their reason for being here disclosed. What is yours? Again, with all due respect.

Please forgive my ignorance, I really don't understand. So many atheists and agnostics, as I have observed, complain, ridicule, and demand that no one approach them with religious dogma of any kind, proseletyze, or "knock" on their door either figuratively or literally. And then come onto a message board of their own accord where a group of people is gathered with that sole purpose in mind. Again, I do apologize. I just don't understand this rationale.

Rational, you make a good point, but in dismissing the Bible wouldn't the most effective way to do that be to simply ignore it and all those who embrace it? Why subject yourself to a group that clearly offends you when you have the option of living your life in the absence of such blatant offense?

Dan, I am not offended in the least. In fact, I am rather enlightened. Thank you all. *smile*

For those of you esposing your right to be here, well of course you have that right. My question is not whether or not you have the right, but rather why would you want to?

My point is that I avoid groups that I find offensive. I would never go into a KKK thread if such existed and say anything to them. I find them deplorable and nothing would be accomplished. I am not comparing atheists to them or any other group, but the principle is the same.

Michael, I have no preference. I don't care that you are here. My question was simple: Why? What purpose? Again, I have never questioned your right to be here. Just your motive. For instance, I am offended by Howard Stern. So if I hung out at his studio at my leisure, my motives might be viewed as suspect.

Because they like to belittle others, argue and preach their beliefs to people they hate.
I don't go to athiest NGs and chatrooms and try to tell them about Jesus, but athiests think it's perfectly OK to ask us "What parts of the Bible make the best toilet paper?" in a section called "Religion & Spirituality ".

Haven't you ever noticed when someone posts a comment which is defamatory or is a false statement about something you feel addresses you? If a believer intentionally addresses atheism, then I am often inclined to look at the question - regardless of the section. In many cases it is simply something preached from a soapbox - and often I just go away rather than rise to the 'bait' - but sometimes I respond. I notice the questions in the "Religion and Spirituality" section do also appear in "Society and Culture" section and are also echoed in the general category "home" - Would you prefer that this topic should be the private territory of the folks who like to bash Atheists? Would you prefer segregation of the folks in the Yahoo Answers crowd on the basis of some kind of religious criterion?

The section is called "Religion and Spirituality", not "Christianity or Bust". Atheists probably come into this section for the same reason that Pagans and Muslims and Hindus etc. come into this section; because they have specific opinions and questions concerning Religion and Spirituality. You don't have to actually be religious to have an opinion or question concerning the subject. Of course Atheists are going to dismiss the Bible as fiction, it's their job for goodness sake, but the fact that they are saying anything at all about it means that they care enough about the subject to spend their time typing out their opinion. They are definitely getting something out of asking and answering in this section just as the rest of us are, so they have as much right here as anybody else.

The Athiest has as much a right to come to a forum and answer questions as a believer. I find this perplexing becasue most true athiests don't waste their time with religion because they only got eighty years at most to live so why waste it in religion chat. My Grandfather was a member of the athiestic society. He didn't waste his time with religion. I think the ones who come in and poke are really questioning their athiesm and testing their beliefs to see if they really believe they are athiest. The ask the hard questions and are looking for reasons to put down faith becasue they want to be able to rationalize away why they don't believe but yet something is still nagging at their hearts and they just can't quite get rid if it.

Some people consider atheism a religion.
Would you rather we rename the section "beliefs"?
And where would you have them go if not here? It's not like this category is an exclusive club or anything.

This is the Religion and SPIRITUALITY section. You don't have to have a religion to be spiritual.
Plus, I think they think it's kind of fun to check up on the fundies.
I know I do.
