I mean Thomas Paine wrote that there were six planets in the Age of Reason. Should we mock him and disregard everything he said because of that scientific error? No. Because it simply wasn't known then exactly how many planets there were.

Well some christians THINK the world was flat, but the bible never said it was. The islamic q'uran however says the earth is not only flat, the sun sets in a muddy spring!

So, which do you want to fault? The people or the religion? You can fault THESE christians, but not christianity. However, you can fault islam AND the muslims.

It may not have been known how many planets there were, but the pre-Christian ancients DID know that the earth is round. They knew a LOT of things. Unfortunately these things conflicted with the teachings of the Church, so their libraries were burned and their scientists persecuted.

By the way - that wasn't an error on Paine's part, just a lack of technology. At the time that's as far as telescopes could see. That is very different from the relatively simple observations it would take to prove the earth's roundness.

Historians believe that if not for the Christian church, we would be 1,000- 1,500 years further advanced than we are now.

Nobody mocks anyone who admits their mistakes and moves on. But, sometimes the only way to reach those who believe something for which there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary is to use humour. There are many things that religions prescribe people to believe that is simply wrong and many people free themselves from these ideas and we should cheer them on. It takes courage to challenge ideas imprinted into your mind since birth.

They don't MOCK them, they simply find it amusing that people used to think that because we have come such a long way. Why do you care?

Well, because they forgot that at one point in history most of the people believed that the world was flat
