I was trying to get to sleep last night when my eye started to hurt. It hurts to blink, and hurts when I touch the eyelid. I put both my hands over both eyes and the hurting eye seemed to be puffy. I can't really tell if it's the eyeball or eyelid that's hurting, but I think it's the eyelid, it looks pretty big. Anyone know the causes?

Two possible reasons: Insect bite, is one (you might not know, very small insects without giving you the sensation might give you small sting, while gardening, while dusting, while relaxing on a lawn etc). Allergy is the other possible cause: allergy to some dust, some thing you ate, some thing you inhaled etc. Rest the eye: see a doc, when you can. Get well!

Probably an old-fashioned "stye", an infection of your eyelid, and swelling, pressure, soreness and "ugliness" can get pretty bad. Buy some over the counter antibiotic OPTHALMIC (for eyes) ointment, carefully lift the sore lid and put a thin line in the crevice between your eye and lid, blink several times to apply it evenly. Don't touch the tip of the tube to your sore, you can spread the infection!! Also three or four times a day put a warm (NOT HOT) damp CLEAN washcloth, you might even want to put it in a sandwich bag to have a cleaner, softer surface) lay it on your eye for about 10 minutes three times a day. If it doesn't seem to be getting better after a couple of days, see a doc. It IS going to have to come to a head and usually rupture (I know, yuck...) but the warm compresses will help that happen sooner. Good luck!

You probably have an internal infection in your eyelid or in the orbit. You should see the doctor today to get put on an antibiotic. It might be something more serious.
