I think the first year of marriage is a paper gift, why not give Paper Roses? Not like the song though. Or her name painted on some nice paper, in some language other than English. Then frame it.

What did you do on your first date? My first anniversary gift revolved around what we did on our first date. We saw Titanic on our date, so on our anniversary I received the Movie and also a book (paper) about the history of the ship. It was a nice way to remember both days!

Traditionally, the 1st Anniversay gift is paper... -You could get a couple of tickets to a concert by someone she likes, or a favorite play, or reservations to a hotel of her choice... Happy Anniversary!

Depends on if she's high maintenance. Will she expect an expensive gift? If so, a trip to the jewelry store is in order, or her favorite bottle of perfume.
Otherwise, what would make me happy is a single red rose in a bud vase and a very nice steak dinner. Oh . . . . and a Anniversary Card signed with the words "Thanks for sharing your life with me. I'll love you forever."

My husband took me on a surprise trip instead of a gift. It was so romantic and the best gift was 'reliving' our honeymoon and spending time together. We went to nice dinners, stayed at a romantic little hotel, went shopping, etc. It was perfect.
