A girl that I have noticed for a long time goes to the gym at the university regularly. I would like to get to know her but not sure how to carry it out. I do not really like those “pickup lines” I find on the Internet. Does it sound weird or stupid if I just go straight and tell her that I have noticed her for a while and would like to know her, and then ask if she wants to go for a cup of coffee or dinner sometime later?
How should I prepare myself for all the unexpected ways she’s going to answer my question? I can’t just prepare all possible answers she’s going to give to me and try to find an appropriate response for each. If I do that, and she gives me an answer that I didn’t prepare for, then I will be surprised and don’t know what to say. I think it is better to train myself into responding to unexpected answers on the spot.
Basically, I’m looking for advices on how I introduce myself(a total stranger) to a girl and training myself to respond to different answers on the spot

I wouldn't ask her out for dinner or coffee straight away (but it might work for you), I'd try and start up a conversation with her (talk about the weather, weekend, equipment) anything really to get a conversation going even if it's just a few words. At least you'll know if she brushes you off or tries to converse back.
At least seeing her at the gym you know you'll see her again so you can keep trying bit by bit to learn more about her. Have you noticed her looking at you?
Don't try one of those pic up lines. She's at the gym to work out. It may be the only HER time she gets in her day.
