You can't. They can only help themselves. Until they decide that they want to overcome their addiction or get something court ordered, there is actually little you can do.

You can not help addicts. Addicts have to help themselves. You can only point them in the direction of treatment in or out patient and to the twelve step programs. You can be supportive, but do not enable, and my biggest best advice is not to say anything about will power. being an addict has nothing to do with will power. To all who say different: Go home and take a whole bottle of exlax the whole thing, and then will yourself not to poop.

I believe that we can help any addict, but not until the addict realizes the true detriment of their addiction. In other words, an addict will not be willing to change until he/she has a stronger desire to change than to fulfill the addiction--only then will an addict receive help.
