My daughter had this surgery. She had her upper jaw broken, pallet split and the top widened and lowered and moved forward. They attached it back in with titanium pins.

When one has a surgery like this this. The mouth goes temporarily numb. The pain isn't as bad as you think. My daughter's main problem was more because she wasn't permitted to blow her nose for 6 weeks as they cut through her sinus cavities. But as for pain, not too bad. Plus the Doctor's give you steroids for swelling, pain meds, stuff for your nose etc.

She was not wired shut. I believe they do not wire shut as much as they use too. She had heavy rubber bands on her teeth that held her mouth shut but she only had to wear these really heavy ones for 4 days. After which she had lighter ones that allowed her mouth to open. She did have a splint on her upper teeth which acts I guess like a cast for a broken bone and holds the teeth secure.

In about 2 weeks she looked normal just talked funny because of the splint on her teeth. After 6 weeks they removed the splint, and in 6 months removed her braces. Her smile is perfect!

She said that she would do it again in a heartbeat as it was not that bad especially for how wonderful the results were.
