According to the Animal Poison Control Center, since July 2003, they have managed over 45 sick pets after eating products containing Xylitol.
Xylitol is a sugar-alcohol sweetener found in sugar-free human food products.
Xylitol is a sugar-alcohol sweetener found in sugar-free human food products such as chewing gum, candy as well as other products. Dogs that eat significant amounts can develop a sudden drop in blood sugar, which can cause weakness, lethargy, loss of coordination, collapse and seizures.
Symptoms can begin in as little as 30 minutes and last hours. It is recommended that pets that experience symptoms be taken to a veterinarian or local emergency clinic for evaluation. Treatment may include hospitalization and intravenous fluids with dextrose supplementation. Some pets can remain symptomatic and may maintain a low blood sugar for several hours.
In humans, xylitol has little to no effect on plasma insulin or glucose levels, but in dogs Xylitol is a strong promoter of insulin release thus is more likely to cause symptoms.*
To prevent toxicity, do not feed your pet human products sweetened with Xylitol. Minimize pet exposure to any area where you may store candy or gum. Many dogs have gotten exposure by getting into purses ande handbags where gum is kept, so make sure you keep purses secure.
Most problems have occurred in dogs because they are less discriminating eats than are cats. With the increased use of Xylitol in human products, Xylitol toxicity may become more common.

Shouldn't be a problem, should pass through the digestive system okay. Now if he ate a sock or some large item that would be different. Also never ever feed your dog chocolate (esp the non sweetened bakers) or grapes. Both are toxic to dogs.
Funny story-my Dad used to live on a farm as a kid, they would give their dog their ABC gum-he I guess would chew it!!
Just read what CS wrote-I don't know about the chemical she named-but if it was sugarless-do as she says and call your vet.

My dogs have done that in the past with no problem. My chihuahua ate a whole pack of gum. She had some constipation problems at first but was fine. As long as it wasn't chocolate covered gum (yes they do make it) you should be ok.

I'd be surprised if it was harmful. I had friends who had a lhasa apso that used to beg for a piece of gum. Loved it. I wouldn't feed gum to my dogs but I would think your dog would be fine. It's soft and should pass.

No she should be fine. I have swallowed gum before and it will just pass. Just keep an eye on her bathroom habits or if she starts vomiting a lot, then take him to the vet. but she should be just fine.

I think your dog will be allright, unless she ate a whole package of gum.
Make sure you keep an eye on her and that she has regular bowel movements. Vomiting is a sign that you have to take her to be seen by a vet.
If she keeps eating well and has regular BM she wil be fine.

IF this was sugarfree gum with xylitol in it you need to get to the vet immediately, this can be very dangerous in dogs.
