I have 4 cats and I have found that the two best are Scoop Away and Fresh Step Scoop. They clump real fast and they keep the litter box stink to a minimum. Stay away from Tidy Cat......It clumps funny and I noticed it doesn't do well with the stink............

As a former animal shelter worker and Vet Tech I always recommend the generic clay cat litter. A clumping litter is the best, just avoid ones that are scented. Cats hate the scented ones. Some cats will tolerate them, others will start going in unacceptable places.
It is imperative that you remove any solid waste and completely change and clean out the box each week. Every 1.5 weeks for clumping. Think about it this way-you have to use a toilet that has not been flushed in a week-imagine the smell and the look even. I know I would be looking for a different place to do my business. That is exactly what your cat will do, if you do not remove waste on a daily basis. Only he/she will do it in an unacceptable place.
Fresh Step is the worst-one vet I worked for said that it advertises that with each step or scratch fragrance is released-well because cats "see" mainly with their sense of smell that litter "blinds" them.

I have been using Arm & Hammer Cat Litter. It's been the best. Also look at a wholesale center like BJ's Wholesale or Sam's Club. They may sale 40lb boxes. Call them before making the trip. You'll save in the long run. Sign up on there site. You may receive coupons from them too but can only use them at a regular store. Hope this helps.

I use arm and hammer litter that is all natural from pet smart. It clumps and you can flush it which makes it so much easier. Plus it is the best litter for odor control. Other litters start to stink even if you scoop them after a couple days.

Personally I use the crystals. They last longer and there is no smell. I scoop them each day as well.
At the shelter we use shredded newspaper for the adult cats - it is changed everyday and during the day if necessary. For the kittens we use layers pellets (yes chicken food). There is no smell and is very absorbent. This is changed every morning and we do a poop scoop during the day as well.
We suggest "Breeders Choice". It is in pellet form made from recycled newspaper. This has good odour control and the lumps can be flushed down the toilet (as can the chicken pellets lol).
Clay litters smell far too much.
Clumping litters can be dangerous. As they expand by 60%, if ingested it will swell in the digestive tract of the cat and cause severe impaction. Specially with kittens as they often get litter caught in their paws and then lick them.

Wood Pellets: I use the wood pellets that they make for pellet stoves. I get a 40 pound bag for about $4.00, then I pour it in the litter box to about 1 1/2 inches deep. There will be no dust to irritate your cat's eyes, and when they pee in it, it doesn't smell. The pellets when wet go into a sawdust, and when I scoop, I shake the scoop a bit over my garbage bag and the sawdust falls through and the pellets stay in the scoop to be returned to the box. When changing to pellets, do it gradually, I usually put one side of the box in pellets, and one side in their usual sand and then extend it over a couple weeks with a little more pellets and a little less sand each. I scoop the poop once a day. You can also scoop the poop out, and then pour the contents through a strainer to get rid of the sawdust part, then return the pellets to the box. Never use clumping sand litter on kittens, when the kitties get wet the clumping litter sticks to them and turns into cement. Anne....I am a breeder of exotics.

cat litter crystals. They cost a bit more but they last for ages - much longer than the regular type. they draw in the moisture and smell.

Any generic brand of kitty litter with odor control but it has to be sand like is the best. It really controls the odor.
