He thinks that the couch is his property, and he thinks that he is dominant to you. You need to get a behaviorist's help ASAP. DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT YOURSELF, your dog could attack you and do serious damage. When they are dominant, they think that they are the boss and will be aggressive to everyone else, especially someone that the dog thinks is below him.

Any drastic change in a dog's behaviour is a warning sign of a problem.

First, any changes in household or routine? Are you "entertaining" a friend and he is jealous that he is being replaced on his couch or bed? Rack your brain and think back to last weeks for any thing different going on and when this started.
Are you verbally or physically getting him off the furniture?

I assume it is cold where you are. Have you noticed any problems with his walk, getting up and down, maybe a older dog? I am thinking he might be have some arthritis coming on with the cold and he prefers the soft furniture?

These questions are to make you stop and really think and maybe get a clue on this change. Normally, drastic changes in behaviour indicate a underlying medical problem and he is trying to tell you something. I would alert his vet tomorrow.

Well to deter him from the couch or bed, get lots of soft drink cans and fill them with coins and take them up then tape them to the edge of the beds and couches. This may be annoying for you but it should hopefully stop them after a while because the cans will make so much noise!
Or you could google this company called bark busters to find a person in your local area.
Hope this helps

He is trying to challenge you. He feels that he is dominate, and therefor it is HIS bed and couch. If you do not feel comfortable correcting his behavior, hire someone to help you. You just need to take the control back. Technically, I can't tell you exactly what to do over the internet for two reasons. One, I'm tired. Two, I don't know your dog or your temperament. You really should have someone help you, especially if it is a large dog that could really hurt you.

This sounds like dominance aggression. In other words, your dog thinks that he is the boss of you. Do not try to handle this by yourself, as it could be dangerous to you. Get the help of a professional behaviorist right away! Your vet can probably recommend one.

HAve you been gone alot? have a new relationship?
There are so many questions you can ask. Dont push yourself on him. but point at him, look him straight in the eye and tell him its a no no. I have had a few at my rescue and even here at home that have tryed that on occation. I look at them and fuss right back without touching them. If need be I point with a flyswater, it tends to make them think. thay arent as dumb as ppl think

He probably just doesn't want to get up. Is he getting old, because he might be getting a little arthritic which would make it painful for him to get up.
