My mother-in-law has all of these symptoms and I cannot determine if it is mental or a personality disorder. She has a serious problem with making up things and low self esteem. I have confronted her when I know she is lying and she will never admit she is lying.

More details: she hasn't been paying her bills and they cut her power off, phone off and water all in the same week. She comes home from work everyday and puts her pj's on no matter what time it is or who is at the house, she will not answer the phone because of the bill collectors calling her, she is denial and thinks these types of problems will go away, she has plenty of money to pay her bills but blows it on things she doesn't need, she has started having problems with people at work, recently got formaly written up, we aren't sure what happen because she has told us about 8 different stories about what happened. I could go on and on

Only a psychiatrist can diagnose a mental illness or personality disorder. However, I would say that this is a B cluster personality disorder of some kind. Try googling borderlilne or histrionic personality disorder and see if that sounds like your mother-in-law. Good luck to you, personality disorders are tough to be around.

I think you should add more details about your mother-in-law, but it sounds like she might have borderline personaliy disorder. My dad has that and he lies all the time and when I catch him in a lie, he never admitts to it. However, my cousin does the same thing. They both have low self-esteem, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have any mental illness. She just likes making up stories that get her attention.

omg! my bf's sister it exactly like that but worst. everything she say is lies lies lies! And since she moved in with us, she has this tenancy to always cause problem and trouble with everyone around her. Its almost like she is miserable with her life and cant wait a sec to ruin other peoples. She lost custody of all three of children's for reason we do not know, cos she lies about it all the time. She has odd people coming by the house to check in on her and we don't know why either, just recently found out that she needs mental/psyciatric help. She cant even walk and its unbearable to see how she limps around but she is still in denial that her knee is fine.....ect...
i think its more of a mental thing....

My mother in law has it too. They want to be right all the time. It can also be an identity disorder. Pathological lying is a mental disorder in itself.

I'm not sure she has a disorder, add more detail, how does she act in general? body language? etc.
