Canon XL-1 Bottom of video is on top with no audio. Also, goes into battery stand by real quick. Any tips?

Just don't drop it. They don't like drops at all.

It is likely that one of the moveable tape guides is not loading fully around the head drum. If this is the case then any recordings that it makes will be unusable in any deck.

Open the cover and look with a good flashlight for any foreign objects that might be obstructing motion. (i.e. a leaf, twig, paper clip, etc.) Anything that can fall inside will. Turn it upside down and shake it good.

Beyond that you would need to see a qualified servicer or send it back to Canon. Be sure to include your credit card number.
