eh... if you don't want to hurt him don't do it.
and uh... if you don't have emotions, you aren't human.
ever learned basic psychology? I'm in friggin 10th grade, and I know this.
so, you might want to reconsider your "terminology" there...
and to let you know, when my girlfriend broke up with me, I did bawl my eyes out. for a week.
I still have boughts of it occasionally.
and she did it in hmm... a way which worked... quite effectively, though, it took six hours, and would have taken longer...
... at any rate...
what she did is this:
she uh... well argued the following:
what is the point of this relationship?
it'll only go badly in the end
so why not end it now.
can you see why this logic is self-defeating?
hmm? so don't use it
but the logically constructed multi-step argument works quite well. toodles.

sorry to say, with an emo bf like that, there isn't a way to break up with him without hurting him badly. you should just tell him straight from the heart. it's like ripping off a bandaid, it'll hurt, but you have to do it

There is no breaking up with a guy that really likes you without some hurt. He's just gonna have to deal with it. Though you can try to bring it to him nicely and tell him exactly how you feel.

The truth is always a good place to start, it sounds like you are concerned with his feelings so you won't be mean. Don't let him drag it out, meaning be nice but don't lead him to believe you can work it out if you don't intend to. Good luck.

If he is as emotional as you say I am not sure anyway is the best way. Gently but firmly so that he knows it is over. Good luck.

Be honest with him. Tell him that you just don't feel the same. Tell him he is a nice guy and bring his self-esteem up and say that there will be someone else who likes him for who he is. (Kinda even out the "rejection.") You just don't feel the same way.
