Please don't. People drive horribly enough with cellphones and iPods. With the added distraction of a PC, involuntary vehicular manslaughter is inevitable. When you drive, you should just be watching the road and driving (AM/FM is OK). Be careful out there.

The idea is to have a "non-hard drive" based computer that runs standalone Windows XP from a Bootable USB drive that runs the music player of your choice.

Your MP3's are stored on another USB drive that can be removed for editing.

This all ties into your sound system (amp subs/speakers).

No hard drive means nothing will crash. A touch screen display is really the only other peice of equipment needed that can be custom mounted in your dash.

Look up BartPE and Sherpya. These two guys found a way to run the full GUI of Windows XP on a USB drive (under 600 Mb).

A shuttle style computer is all you need for the computer.

Here is a good place to start:

$500-infinity. Thers no "mini-Desktop". Just go with a laptop and hook up a monitor to it. Anymore laptops are as powerful as desktops Anways depending on how powerful you want it will alter the price. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premuim and Vista Ultimate are good enertainment Pcs. Vista is the most buetiful OS i've ever seen. Vista computers need good specs and graphiccards and thats going to reflect on the PC.

I've thought about this too.

Once you take out the radio, you should have plenty of room to put all the pieces in the dash. Mount a LCD screen to the dash and away you go.
