Muslims have said Americans don't understand their society and why this is necessary. They say there is very little crime in mid-east due to this law. How does the end justify the means?

These types of punishments are primarily, if not only found in middle eastern, Arab nations, and very few. Only 15% of Muslims live in that part of the world and that's a very small minority. What Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. . . (nations that has less Muslims than China) does with its legal system does not represent all Muslim people. You'll find that Muslim nations outside of the middle east and parts of Africa, don't have these types of punishments.

Off the topic, I just wanted to tackle this verse:

An early answerer posted this verse as an example of how "extreme" Muslims are:

Sura 5:33: "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they will have an awful doom."

The KEY words of this verse are "those who wage war against Allah and His messenger". I agree with the verse and most people do. Those who wage war against ANYONE for unjust reasons deserve the harshest punishment. When America was attacked on Sept. 11th, it was waged war against and it responded as any nation and SANE civilization would: it did what it thought was appropriate to counter attack. Now, if you're one of those pacifists who believe that you should "turn the other cheek" when being attacked, that's your problem and most of the world doesn't have this type of mentality. Read the verses next time.

This practise was implemented long ago in Middle East as a deterrence for people from committing crime. Such practise had already been revoked and no longer being practise worldwide. There is an impact on such rule in Middle East. With the enforcement of such rule in the past, today U can just leave your wallet in the open and no one will take away your wallet. During prayer time, the shop owner do not have to close their shops to do their prayer. They just leave their shops door ajar, nothing was touched when they resume back for business. The Middle East people learn to be honest the way the rules was being enforced, otherwise, it will not be effective.

The Quran is rather explicit -- kill disbelievers in a cruel fashion:

Sura 5:33: "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they will have an awful doom."

5:38: "As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is Exalted in power."
5.39: "But if the thief repents after his crime, and amends his conduct, Allah turneth to him in forgiveness; for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."

I think from the two verses this should only apply to those who are repeat offenders and even after asking for forgiveness they keep on committing the crime.

Considering that so much crime is done by repeat offenders then i think it would not be wrong to have a tough punishment for them so they can't do it again and others can live peacefully.

the mean is good, the really strange thing is justifying stealing. put people in jail like animals and taking their freedom is really cruel. any way thieves are cruel people.

did i mention sodomizing in modern prisons! some people would love that!

the guy below me got one thing wrong which is imprisoning, the correct is expelled from that land. i just can't see what's wrong with being cruel with cruel people!!

Many Europeans have the same questions about the American legal system.
