I don't think it really matters what the envelope back looks like, as the wax seal will make it look elegant and authentic, as in the olden days. I think your guests will appreciate the time you spent and comment on how classy it is, no matter what.
I am also choosing to do this for my invitations, but can't decide between the real wax or the silver or gold glue gun sticks. I know they also have stickers out there that look like real wax. Let me know which you have and how they turn out!

I can not find a source out there which states you should not use sealing wax on a horizontal flap on an envelope. I think it would look very elegant to do so. Just be sure to get the wax seal as thin as possible to ease the item going thru the postage machines. You don't want to wind up paying extra for hand canceled stamps...

Doesn't look like anybody here has a clue, and I'm not sure what's 'proper' my self. If it's important to you call a classy stationery store. They would know fer sure! If not, do what you want.
