Depends on how bad your back pain is and where it is exactly. I have a bulging disc in my lower back and it hurts my back to sit for long periods of time. I sit with an ice pack between my back and the chair or the couch and that seems to help. But, it's better if I move around, change positions, every couple of hours. My pain is chronic, so it never goes away. I don't know how bad your pain is, but I would suggest not sitting or standing in one place for too long.

Sitting is one of the worse things you can do for back pain. You must keep moving.
