i have two tax returns for two different places i worked at, can i file them seperately instead of together?

Nope.
You add your W2s from all jobs onto one return.

You have to file them together. The only way you could do so seperately is to file an amendment to your return. You cite a reason like, "Husband got the W2 form, 1099-misc showed up much later." Either way, you are still filing the same return. On a side note. If you husband is contracting... get a CPA. Its worth every penny. The statements in your question truly frighten me: "I'm thinking that we would owe less by doing it that way? Not sure if thats possible, This is our first time doing our taxes with a 1099." If you've never done this before, you dont need to be "thinking" about anything but getting an accountant to work this for you. I promise your accountant will think of sh7t you never even dreamed of and save you $$$$.

It's sopposed to be total for the year from all sorces.
