Let me answer this from the police standpoint.
First off, buying him a gun as a gift is a bad idea for a few reasons. Buying a gun is a hassle. You will have to pay the registration fees and everything else when you buy it. When you give it to him, you will have to take it back to a gun store, secure it with the store, then pay fees to register it into his name and wait an additional waiting period. Plus, if he is not happy with the gun, he may not be able to return or exchange it. His department is likely to issue him a fire arm anyway, so he may not need another.
A better suggestion would be to get him a gift certificate to a gun or equipment store so that he could purchase whatever he wants.

Unless you are a complete newbie to firearms, or have been living on top of a mountain in Tibet for the last century, you are aware that from the 1870s until the middle of the 20th century the terms "Colt" and "revolver" were synonymous in the police world. Colt revolvers were the most popular law enforcement sidearms in the world, and no Colt product personified the law enforcement handgun better than the Official Police Revolver.

Probably the most popular back up revolver carried is the Smith & Wesson "J" frame revolver. It is a compact six shot revolver with a 2 inch barrel. The stainless steel mdl 640 (38 spl) has a concealed hammer that won't snag on your clothing. If cost is no problem check out the "scandium" framed model 340. These revolvers are so light you don't know you're carrying one.

Most police departments don't use revolvers anymore, except for a back up gun. The most popular of these are the S&W Model 60, and the model 642 [hammerless].These are small framed 5 shot models for concealment purposes. They sell for about $400 retail.

many have switched to the Glock 40cal. or some other brand of 40cal. Used to be 9mm but they have poor knock down capability. for a secondary weapon I would buy a 50 cal desert eagle but then again Im a bit of an extremist.

With something of that nature, I would consult with the graduate. Also, different police forces / agencies have different policies concerning weapons as well.

I would discourage you from purchasing any firearm for him until you know what firearms he's allowed to carry off duty. Many agencies have limitations as to what caliber and type. Don't waist your $$ on something he cant even use.
Why a revlover by the way?

I would recommend a Colt King Cobra, or a Colt Python. Both fire .357, a very solid round.
Unfortunately, both these models have gone out of production, but they are very high quality weapons.

Check with your friend. Many departments have restrictions on the type and caliber of backup/off duty weapons their officers can carry.
