I guess the trick is not to start. I started in elementary school and have been doing it ever since. I'm now 37. When I jamb a finger, I have to crack the knuckle. Or, after a while using my hands turning wrenches, I feel the need. I haven't noticed any ill effects yet. But I don't do it all the time.

First, it hasn't been proven bad for your health. This one guy cracked one of his hands for over 5 years, and didn't touch the other, and his hands were exactly the same still.

If you still want to kick the habit, the best thing to do is start another one. Every time you get the urge to crack your knuckles, do something else instead- perhaps stretch your whole body? Just get your mind off it, and make sure to keep doing the same thing. Eventually your mind will ignore the urge to crack your muscles because you simply never responded to it.

If you want to stop, I suggest you really try to become conscience of cracking your knuckles. That will keep you aware of what you are doing. When you need to pop them, try stretching them & if that doesn't work, just rub one finger at a time, working out the cramp. I used to crack my knuckles too. But I stopped when I realized it affected what I do because I play a lot of instruments. I think it's okay if they pop naturally because there is nothing you can do about it.

& what someone else said about chiropractors, they aren't good for you & you shouldn't go to them. They don't fix the problem. They only temporarily relieve it.
