On one episode of LA or Miami Ink a girl gets a tattoo of a Japanese cherry blossoms, but not a tree. Maybe you can have an idea of what the flowers will look like. Hopefully that will help, even though I personally don't believe in getting tattoos.

take a picture with you. Do some research. I'm not a fan of cherry blossoms but here I found a page that has a few. When you go to it, start clicking on previous so you'll see more samples. If not interested search for japanese tattoos, but please do not just get whatever tattoo they find you in a book. Make up your mind and organize size, place and color. And have a blast!!!
Happy tat adventure!!!

Always Always Always bring a picture of what you are looking for. What you think a is a cherry blossom may be totally different from what the artist thinks. Bring some ideas and pics with and also look at what the artist may have to offer.. don't forget to look at pics of past work as well.. some artists are better at flowers and others may be better at lettering... each has their specialty.. ask questions.. this is pretty permanent and no room for mistakes.

If you want to bring a picture for specific-ness, but cherry blossoms are a common tattoo. Many tattoo artists can draw one up if they don't have examples in their books.

You can, but it would certainly be a good idea to take along pictures to give some idea of what you want, as an aid to communicating your ideas to the artist. They may not have designs you like, and in any case, by taking in pictures and ideas of your own you can ensure that you get a unique custom tattoo no-one else will have.
I'd also suggest looking at their portfolio of work to see whether the artist's style appeals to you personally - a good tattoo artist will be able to work very flexibly, but most artists have particular types of work they're most interested in doing, and it'll help if you find someone whose ideas mesh with your own.
Also, DO NOT be afraid to discuss what you want, at length, with the artist. If they're worth giving your custom, they won't mind, I promise. But what I've seen, often, (I love tattoos, I have several - the most recent of which is itchily healing even as I type - and I used to work in a tattoo studio myself) is people dashing into tattoo studios and rushing into choosing a design and having it done, all because they're too nervous to talk it through properly with the staff in the studio. Ask questions. Do they foresee any problems with the design you want, the location, the colours? Do they have any suggestions?
And if, at any stage in this process of discussing your ideas and looking at their work, you aren't happy with the nearest tattoo place, go visit another. And another. Thinking it through properly = a good tattoo you'll be happy with in the long term. Good luck!
