A hoarse voice is caused by irritation to the vocal cords. This can be achieved by screaming, talking too much, certain food allergies can cause it. Laryngitis is often caused by these reasons, but it can also be caused by a bacterial infection on the vocal cords. Gargling with warm salt water is good, also a mixture of 1/2 warm water and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide will help, but DO NOT swallow this mixture. It's not going to kill you if you swallow a little, but for god's sake don't drink it. Hope this helps.

Over-use, basically. Too much singing, talking or shouting will cause your voice to become hoarse.
You might also try looking up 'hoarse' with the proper spelling ;)

inflammation to the area. infection or a 'cold' will do this to it, or smoking. smoking causes irritation and inflammation due to heat and dry toxic particles. some people get major infections that leave their voice hoarse for life. 'husky' is sexy on some girls though, like Demi Moore. oh how I loved her in St Elmo's Fire.

You may be referring to inflammation of the larynx, which is the "voice box". Strenuous overuse or infection can cause this, most commonly.

sound exists in the form of waves, waves are caused by vibration. When you sing, talk, yell, scream...too much, the excessive vibrations in your larynx cause it to swell, therefore causing the waves to not transmit in their normal frequency.

On top of what the other people said, it may also be a thyroid problem.
If it does not go away, it must be looked at.
