Where do you live? If it's somewhere warm, definitely get a lab. Huskies have thick fur coats and are a lot happier in cooler climates, whereas labs are happy just about anywhere as long as there's someone to play with.

First of all, if it's a dog from the pound, are you sure it's not a mutt? Just because the shelter staff say that it's a lab or a husky doesn't mean it is one. They're usually just guessing. The dog you get could end up being a mutt with a personality unlike either breed!

But if you're talking about purebred dogs, then carefully research both breeds to see which one is better for your personality. Since they are both extremely active breeds that need a lot of exercise and stimulation, and they tend to destroy everything if they don't get it, you may find that neither one is right for you!

Labrador retrievers are very active and rambunctious. When socialized and trained, they can make excellent family pets because of their tolerance towards children, strangers, and other animals. They are very responsive to training and quick to learn, and they love to play.

Siberian huskies are also extremely active, probably more so than the lab. They are beautiful, true, but cannot be trusted off-leash, will kill cats and small animals, and are rather high strung around children. They're also more stubborn than labs. If you're a first-time dog owner, the lab might be a better choice.

But like I said, if you're getting a mutt from the pound, there's a good chance it won't have either of these breeds in it. So judge the dog by the dog's individual personality, not by the breed(s) that the staff claims that it has.

I'll add my 2 bits, though I have Malamutes, which are similar in most respects to Huskies.

My Malamutes loved playing with my neighbors yellow lab. Northern breeds and labs love people. If huskies are like malamutes, they only shed once a year...but it ALL comes out then. so, shedding isn't really a problem usually, but that one month it's a nightmare. Huskies won't fetch or do the retriever thing where labs live for it...and won't stop bringing you something to throw for them once you start. Labs can be very hyper until they are 2 years old, then they mellow out some. Huskies will always have a wanderlust and if they take off, will stay gone quite some time, seeing the sights, exploring everything and having a grand old time. Both need lots of exercise. Both are loving and people oriented.

I believe the dog's personality reflects it's owner on the mean scale, though there are the exceptions.

It probably won't be a purebred, which is the best, but if you live in Texas it is cruel to have a Husky outside. Also Huskies have lots of fur to shed, groom and clean. Labs need lots of exercises and love the water. Just get the one you connect with and research his breed traits later. This is a lifetime commitment and not a cheap one, so be sure you can give a dog all he will need in his life.
And I hope you mean the POUND, not pond, which is the best place to adopt.

A lab is very energetic for the most part and a husky is tooo. Both love outdoors!!! Depending on where you live Huskys (i have one for almost 10 years) she enjoys the winter months. The summer months she has to stay indoors (except pody and play) This varies from state to state. I have a Lab i have had him for 9 years. He needed a lot of exercise when he was younger oh did he !!! Lots of play too!!
Both good dog breeds but i would consider getting a husky unless the dog would be able to have a cool invironment.

Go by what you see, hear and feel. The pound will test your senses and may not have either a Lab or a Huskie, but if you look hard enough you just might find a dog perfect for you.

well, i think you should hang out with both of them separately FIRST ... just to see whose personality you like more...and choose based on personality.
if you CANT do that... and both dogs are purebreds, GO WITH THE LAB.
huskies are REALLY energetic... labs are too, but ... not soo much...
huskies are jumpers, you'd need a high fence.
huskies are happier in cooler environments
huskies and labs shed a lot, but it seems that.. since the huskie hair is longer, it would suck even more.
LABS cant jump as high, labs are happy in any environment, labs have short, really soft hair, labs are more willing to fetch a ball, labs SWIM- theyre just more of a happier, family kind of dog.

Both breeds are very loving, but are very high energy. Prepare to spend time with them. The labrador disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog.
The characteristic temperament of the Siberian Husky is friendly and gentle, but also alert and outgoing. He does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs. Some measure of reserve and dignity may be expected in the mature dog. His intelligence, tractability, and eager disposition make him an agreeable companion and willing worker. They also can be very stubborn and sometimes will only do tricks if they want to.

Are there children around? Huskies are wonderful dogs, but can be a bit aggressive at times (especially males), but labs are almost always good with kids.

Well at the local pond you will only find water dogs. So I guess its a LAB.
