Actually, Betadine solution is the preferred by vets for cleaning and antiseptic properties. No home should be without, used for humans too. Simply place a cloth over the eye itself, use a swab or cotton ball to dab on the cut. Neosporin is fine. There is a vet version of the same as OTC. Even if a bit gets in eye it will not hurt. Most animal eye ointments have neosporin in them.
If no Betadine handy, then plain water to clean and the ointment is fine. You do want to keep a look out that it is healing and no puffy area comes up. This means it scabbed over but infected underneath. We had a tomcat that got majorly clawed up by another male. Some bad cuts! All responded well to the suggested first aid. We keep a big bottle of betadine with all the first aid supplies at the rescue. The first thing our vet will do for a wound is soak with betadine to clean.
Peroxide and alcohol are ancient history almost. They were found to burn and kill healthy skin cells around a wound and keep wound from healing as quick. They do burn when applied. FYI

Would you use peroxide on a cut above ur eye, if there was even a slim chance it would go in ur eye?
I thought not, so no dont use peroxide. Use a salt/water solution. A MILD solution and get her to lay down when u do it. Cover the eye gently with a cloth or something to help prevent anything going in it. If the cut does not look any better in a few days then vet. Be really really careful about using anything on it that u can use on humans. We have different body systems to animals and some stuf can kill them dead. Ring a vet if ur unsure. Oh and colloidal silver aint all it is cracked up to be.

Peroxide is good for cleaning wounds, but as it is above the eye I would only worry that it might accidentally get in his eye. SO, neosporin is ok. But only a small amount, because again if he scratches at his eye or soething, you don't want it getting in his eye, though peroxide would be far worse.
Also... SALT? Ever try opening yoru eyes when in the ocean? I didn't think so. Don't use salt above the eye any more than peroxide, though I agree that salt is a great wound cleanser in general, just not over the eye.

I've used Neosporin with great results in places they can't lick, but I'd be wary of putting peroxide near the eye.

Hi!!
Clean wounds with hot water and soap or hydrogen peroxide before scratch develop into abscesses or infections.
To relieve itching, give 1/4 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight of loose chamomile tea in your pup's food daily.
And visit to vet!!

Peroxide is good for most infections but if your concerned, go to the herb store and buy some colloidal silver. I'm telling you, you use that stuff for you or your dog you'll be hooked. It's just water with silver in it.

I heard some where not to use neosporin on dogs. Not sure why, but if you cleaned it leave it alone it will scab over by morning. Just keep an eye on it.
