i stay up late a lot with lots of homework. i usually manage it well, but lately i've been really tired at school. i need to be able to stay up without energy drinks, pills, etc...

Do your homework when you get home and go to bed early. That is the healthiest, safest solution.

Do you work after school? Do you Have To work after school? If you do work, can you cut back some on your hours? Whether you work or not, you probably have a routine of getting your homework done-do you have a whole bunch every night? Are there projects you can space out to work on say 15-30 mins. per day till done for completion date? If you can, go to bed half an hour or more earlier? When a person is tired, they need more food in their system, especially if not getting enough rest. Would you be willing to make yourself a snack of a sandwhich with protein for when you do your studying? Protein lasts longer, with complex carbs, and could also help you be more alert when getting up in the morning for school. Take care.

I know you said that you don't want to stay up without energy drinks but there are some out there that don't have caffeine and are safe to drink everyday.

If you don't wanna take pills, drinks, or anything then do your work @ school and goto bed early. I leave school at school and home at home. I do all my work at school. Make yourself goto bed early one night so you'll follow that routine each night.
