I am a new Christian and I go to a church that preaches nothing but love and acceptance for all human beings - no matter what. It teaches me to be more like Christ - non-judgmental. So, I'm just wondering why so many Christians can hate gays and others. To me, that's not being very Christ-like.

True Christians do not.
However, there are some mock "christians" who preach hatred, bigotry, discrimination and therefore violence against LGBT people. The correct term for such people is "hypocrites." Fortunately they are a tiny, yet strident, minority.

This is especially true of those who say "love the sinner, hate the sin." Being exactly as God made you, whether that is LGBT or straight, is most certainly not a sin. Spreading hatred most certainly is.
What black-hearted and self-righteous folks these people must be! Just don't call them "christians," since they are acting completely against the teachings of Jesus.

There is a difference between loving a person and hating the sin.

Some people do not express this difference very well, and some people do not take this fact very well.

We are to love the people, and a part of this is to point out what sin is and what the penalty is (eternal death). Then we need to tell them of their Savior Jesus.
