Hi. If I filed an extension and sent in an amount I estimated to be the taxes owed, then upon actually doing the taxes found that I overpaid the initial estimated amount owed, do I have to request the refund or will the IRS automatically send the difference back to me?

Hi. This is for 2005 taxes. I sent in the prepared 1040 and now realize I overpaid--I forgot to add in the taxes I prepaid at the time I filed for extension. Essentially I paid my owed taxes twice. I know, I'm an idiot. In my defense I was positive I paid a large amount at the time I filed the extension but could not find any proof of it (moved twice--paperwork everywhere) but have now found the proof I paid.

Once the IRS receives and process' your return any overpayment that you made will be sent back to you. The normal processing time frame for an Amended Return is 8 to 12 weeks.
There is a possibilty that you may get paid interest on the over payment. This interest will be taxable to you in the year that you receive it.

When you file the actual tax return, at the bottom of the form is a box to check whether you want a refund of overpayments or if you want it applied to next years taxes. If you check refund, your check will be sent with no further paperwork from you.

You can file an amended return, and get it in a month or two. Eventually they'd catch it, and send you your refund automatically, but that can take a couple years.

the irs will never automatically do anything but audit people. submit the proper papers or form for your refund.

They may automatically refund. I'd ask for it though because who knows how long you'll have to wait??? Charge THEIR a$$ penalties and interest!!!
