Your cat could have a number of things going on with him. Look in his mouth, to be sure that he didn't break/lose a tooth in the cat fight. The water could be aggravating an injury, and you know how much cold water hurts a broken filling! He'll need a vet visit if this is the problem.

You can do a "tent" test, (if you haven't already), to check if he's dehydrated. Hold him, and take a pinch of his loose shoulder skin, pulling it up gently like a tent. (Don't pinch hard, just lift the skin.) Let it go. It should go back in place immediately. If it sorta keeps that shape for a bit, you've got a dehydrated kitty, who will need subcutaneous fluids ASAP! (Probably his eyes look a little sunken, too, I'll bet.)

Your vet will insert an IV needle under your cat's skin, and slowly let Lactated Ringer's Solution make a pouch of liquid there. This will be absorbed, rehydrating the cat. He'll probably run a few tests, for diabetes, thyroid and kidney function, and do a blood count to look for infection. Someone else mentioned looking for puncture wounds, and they were right - these wounds get septic, and cause what used to be called "Cat Scratch Fever."

If it's an infection, the rehydration, some antibiotics, and some rest will be in order, I'm sure. You'll probably notice a much better appetite and willingness to drink water, after the cat recovers from dehydration.

If it's diabetes or thyroid or kidney problems, it's not a death sentence, either. All can be treated fairly well, and you can learn to give shots and IV's yourself. And no, your cat won't hate you. When he's feeling bad, he'll start to know that the IV makes him better. My guys did!

Good luck, and I hope he gets well soon!

I had a cat that I brought in from outside and after a week, he became very sick. I took him to the vet, found that he had some sort of a viral infection and that he was severely dehydrated. The doctor had to put him on IV fluids for 24 hours to save his life. Don't wait too long to get him help if he needs it.

Your cat could have a serious infection from a cat fight and you should take him to a vet to check his health. He may need antibiotic if there is an infection with an abcess forming inside his body.

Cats who eat canned food do not need to drink water.

Don't worry, he will eventually drink on his own. Right now, he is probably enjoying being molly-coddled and the medicine dropper is a good excuse for him to get that attention. Its a good thing that you are giving him wet food. Add a couple of teaspoonfuls of water to his wet food too - that's what I do. Cats are notorious for not wanting to drink water too often. I have to put water in my 1 yr old via a medicine syringe at times when I notice he has not drunk all day. But sounds like you're doing a good job there. :)

get to a vet right away. your cat will die if he is not rehydrated. he needs to be supported with intervenous. It's okay if you don't understand, that's why there are vets out there. They do. He probably has an infection and will only get worse if he doesn't receive treatment and antibiotics. hurry!! Good luck!
