She is either biting herself because she is nervous or alone, or she is allergic to something. Possibly fleas. To stop the itch from the dryness, you can give a dog benadryl. Depending on the weight of the dog a dose or two. I have large dogs and still give them the smallest possible dose. Also, use advantage or frontline or something to keep pests away. It really does work. In combination, you will see a HUGE change. Try to keep the dog brushed if they have a lot of thick fur. The undercoat can sometimes irritate them when it isn't removed as soon as it sheds off. Trust me, you won't catch anything from it. And it is fairly common in dogs, especially in warmer climates...I live in FL, see it ALL the time:) Good Luck!!!

Has your dog had a bath recently? Has her diet changed recently? You may have to be a little bit of a detective unless you can pinpoint something definite that has changed in her world lately, eliminate it and see if the problem clears up. It could be many things: allergies, mites, fleas, a fungus or even a disease process. It is worth a trip to the vet to get a diagnosis because bloodwork or a skin biopsy may be needed to figure out the cause. Don't let it get out of hand though because it will be harder to treat and she could get a secondary infection if she scratches. I have a 2 year old doxie with Acanthosis Nigricans (a skin condition) and I have to stay on top of it. He gets bathed in a special shampoo. Keeping up with it he has very little problem with the disease and has a happy, healthy life. Staying on top of the problem also saves me lots in vet bills! Good luck and best wishes.

It could be many different things, such as fleas, allergies, ezcema, dermititis or some other kind of parasite such as mites. You can't figure it out yourself just by looking at it. Take the dog to the vet.
