I am actually an athiest with a great respect for those who are religious. I never say, "thank god" or even "god damnit" or anything of the sort. I was brought up to respect Christianity and in fact, my family is still very Christian. But just because I don't believe that doesn't mean that I disrespect other's beliefs. The world would be a better place if we all respected those who held strong beliefs. Just like I don't say "ni--er", or "fu__ing a__hole". People need to learn that respect starts with language and I can still hold true to my beliefs without slamming someone else's.

I have a good friend who did his master's work in theology. He tells me that what is commonly considered taking the Lord's name in vain is not what the scribes intended. Apparently, the intent of the original Hebrew "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" was something to the effect of, "You better not tell people the Lord said something if he didn't. Don't put your words in God's mouth." Based on a strict translation, my guess is that the average atheist would never take the Lord's name in vain and if he or she did, it would be hypocracy.

That being said language is shaped by the cultural norms we are exposed to in our developmental years. If someone who later becomes an atheist is raised with an example of someone who constantly spouts the name of the Lords as profanity he or she is likely to do so as an expression of habit not hypocracy.

If an Atheist chooses to deliberately embrace the use of the Lord's name as profanity, I would still suggest that he or she is probably doing so to be offensive. I suspect you and I have just invested more thought in the subject than all atheists combined. A hypocrite is someone who shows one set of beliefs to the world and lives a very different private life. With most athiests, what you see is pretty much what you get.

If I say Jesus Christ. How is that using his name in vain? The official dictionary definition to the word in question is as follows: ineffectual or unsuccessful; futile: a vain effort. How is saying his name any of this????

You know what is truly hypocritical? I can name a few things...

1. Worship no god but me.. But you ALL worship the almighty dollar including your preachers who can never get enough. or build a steeple high enough.

2. Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth. Do not bow down to any idol or worship it.. BUT, you will wear a cross and bow to a hanging man suffering.

3. Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. You have six days in which to do your work, but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to me. AND, this is the one day, his only day off that you all ask all your prayers and questions...

4. Oh and the one most important thing. I want no part of any religion that worships a man that has been brutally NAILED TO A CROSS OF WOOD!

what here is really hypocritical? might wanna re-think the question, but clear your mind and wipe all the brain damage away religion has oppressed on you.

Let's see... For starters, I tend to curse Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the Holy Spirit and such, because I was raised as a christian, and though I managed to escape, the years of programming tend to resurface...especially if I'm about to crack my head on something.
On the other hand, I had already thought of this, and it's with pride and joy that I notify you that I usually curse on the name of Mahoma, Buddha, Jesus, Satan and Tom Cruise. I'm still missing the Jedis and the Siths in my cursing, but I'm still young.
They'll be there in due time.

I think you got enough answers to fill your head for awhile, & help you to be better informed. However, I find it interesting when a Christian friend, in anger says "God damn it!" while he tells me I shouldn't say "For god's sake!" when I don't believe in god (or gods). There's enough hyprocracy within the religion itself, without constantly bashing Atheists. If you're comfortable with you "faith" why does it even bother you? Why do WE bother so many Christians? Oh just forget it.

Edit: Well, I see that at least one Christian gave me a thumb's down, at least for now! I just wanted to add that god isn't AWAYS used as a swear word, (as in the case of my Christian friend), but I do say "For god's sake!" That's usually when I find something inhumane--like the situation in Iraq. On that subject, someone here said something which I believe would have been better stated as FUNDAMENTALIST Christians.

No, it isn't hypocritical. It is hypocritical when a Christian uses the Lord's name in vain. It has nothing to do with hypocrisy for someone who doesn't believe.

Good Question! Maybe because people use it so much and when the say the name dose not have anything to do with god. People say @ss when it really means female donkey or B*tch when it really means female dog. I hope I got it right.

You are awsome for asking this question. Of course it is Hypocrytical. They know that God has Power over them, and that He has Dominion over everything on Earth. They can not think of anything Higher to call on, because there is none higher.

They may not see it today, but what is inside of them, is called their conscience, God created it in them so that they would know the truth regardless of what they may verbalize, and try to convince themselves of today.

Right now, they are testing God, dipping their toe in the water, to see if He is real, just like a little kid that sticks his tounge out at a parent behind their back. The child knows that his parents will not approve of his actions, but since the child thinks the parent don't know, he thinks he can get away with it.

The atheist is much like this child. The thing they don't seem to realize, is that the parent is not going to Knock them out for their behavior, the parent generally will smirk to themselves and say, "One of these days, little johnny will see how much I love him, then he will know why I have these rules in place." He will love them inspite of their sins. But just like a parent, who has laid out the rules, with consequences, so has our Heavenly Father. If you break the rules, you face the consequence. It doesn't mean that the parent or "God" does not love the child, it is because He loves them that he has to enforce the rules.

I hope this answers the question you asked.

That's like saying that someone who's taken an oath of celibacy shouldn't say the word f*ck. We have the right to use any expression we wish.

I have and use a big repertory of words including God, Hell and others, that are not appropriate for this forum, in the way I liked.
