So people know what they are eating, some people have to watch calories, or the amount of sugar, or salt (sodium) many different reasons, and it is required by law.

It's a law. To quote, "FDA's rules implement the provisions of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA), which, among other things, requires nutrition labeling for most foods (except meat and poultry) and authorizes the use of nutrient content claims and appropriate FDA-approved health claims."

The reason this became law is to protect the public from misleading or false claims. Serving sizes are standardized, and certain information has to be explained, in a certain size type. Companies can get fined big $$$ if they do not comply.

It became a LAW on retail foods in the mid 90's. (not for restaurants or food service sizes
To assist the public to be healthier eaters and assist people with allergens or other important health risks.

I believe it's the mandated law that food items must bear the nutritional information for the consumer's knowledge.
Wouldn't you want to know what you are eating and if it's good for you?

They add these so we can watch how many calories we are consuming and also how much fat, sugar, and sodium is in the food.. Some people watch this...

the reason being is so we know exactly what we are consuming (if they indeed are telling the truth) we intrust oursleves in the belief those labels are correct!! Our diets are usually based on those labels and common sense!!

Because consumers have asked for it. This way they can decide whether they want to eat it.
