Hi I am not Chinese, but I know that Chinese New Year is on 18 February. I would like to give my neighbours an appropriate gift? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

This year February 18th will mark the beginning of the Year of the PIG!! Some very easy gifts to give are envelopes containing coins or sweets (traditional styles can be bought easily in Chinatown), or you could give fortune cookies. Oranges and tangerines are a symbol of gold and wealth so they also make an inexpensive present to encourage fortune and prosperity in the New Year. If the person you are buying for was born in the year of the pig you could buy a little jade pendant or statue in the shape of a pig.

tangerines. they represent good luck and good health. Arrange them nicely in a cute little basket with firecrackers around them. The firecrackers ward off evil spirits in the new year
