- Distal means furthest from rest of the body: foot rather than knee
- Lateral means to the side or away from the midline: cheekbone rather than nose
- Superior means higher or closer to the head: chin rather than neck
- Anterior means furthest forward or in front of: toenail rather than heel
- External means on the outside: skin rather than skeleton
