The America-Mexico border is 1,940 miles long. An average of 10,000 illegal aliens cross the border every day - over 3 million per year. One third will be caught and many will try again. About half of those remaining will become permanent U.S. residents (3,500 per day).
There are an estimated 9 to 11 million illegals in the U.S., double the 1994 level. A quarter-million illegal aliens from the Middle-east currently live in the U.S, and a growing number are entering via the Mexican border.
80% of cocaine and 50% of heroin in the U.S. is smuggled across the border by Mexican nationals. Drug cartels spend a half-billion dollars per year bribing Mexico's corrupt generals and police officials, and armed confrontations between the Mexican army and U.S. Border Patrol agents are a real threat. There have been 118 documented incursions by the Mexican military over the last five years.
Illegal aliens have cost billions of taxpayer-funded dollars for medical services. Dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to illegal aliens. Taxpayers pay a half-billion dollars per year incarcerating illegal alien criminals.
$60 billion dollars are earned by illegal aliens in the U.S. each year, and one of Mexico's largest revenue streams consists of money sent home by illegal aliens working in the U.S.
this was in 2002, has it gotten better?

Well down here in North Alabama, they have recently discovered a big drug smuggling from Mexico to Kilpatrick (Little Mexico, Drug City, Home of the Druggies as we call it). All the illegals had a big march after the city of Albertville passed a bill for all illegals to leave and go back to Mexico. There were a lot of people that were going to go down there with their shotguns and rifles and blow some illegal heads off. It was really big and chaotic. You can't even get a job down here or anywhere else just about it because of all of the illegals. Where I go to school (I'm in the 9th grade) we can't even learn due to all the illegal mexicans that can't talk english and they cut up during class. Everybody knows they are illegal, but the cops and teachers don't do anything about it. It's high time that we do something about it. If Bush won't we can.
Edit to the second person that answered, They already have brung 10-20 family members over here. That's what they are doing in Albertville and Kilpatrick.

Could we take this question in proper perspective? I believe that question has to be asked first.
Who is "us" in the question? Can it be generalized? The question posed here may not have underlying meanings, but the answers sure did reflect that. Does "us" refer to us Americans or was that simply assumed?
The Statue of Liberty, the grand symbol of American freedom, boasts of the lines "Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses." What about it now?
-- o --
On a lighter note: Antonio Banderas pointed out how Americans seem to flock to Mexico... during Spring Break. While there, American women flash their breasts and then return to the United States. How then can the Mexicans not resist going to the USA?

1. It has caused the population to swell, straining our resources and diminishing the quality of life.
2. It has taken away jobs from American citizens who are young and trying to enter the workforce or who are trying to move off the welfare rolls into the workplace.
3. It has lowered the wages of American workers.
4. It has caused an outflow of capital form the U.S. as illegal workers send dollars out of the country.
5. It has strained public services as illegal immigrant workers require services such as jails, but don't pay taxes to pay for services.
6. It has brought diseases such as West Nile Virus into the US.

It's not how HAS it...it's how WILL it.
While some people think that it's ok there are only 12-20 million...peace love let's all drink a Coke...
But what happens when those 12-20 want to bring 10-20 family members EACH over through chain migration?
That's a lot of people.
It's not what is happening NOW...it's what WILL happen if we grant them all amnesty.

They are costing more than they are contributing:
Someone has to pay for their healthcare. Do they? No, we tax payers do.
Someone has to pay for their children's education. Do they? No, again, we tax payers do.
We are also having a lot of them coming in and driving w/out insurance, causing drunk driving accidents, committing murders, committing other violent crimes...
Do I need to continue, or is this enough?

- rule of law undermined, unwiritten rules about what laws can be broken, and by who replace laws from the people
- total cost of services provided (hospitals, increased road use, police protection, schools etc) exceeds value of economic output, therefor economic gains are privatized, and economic costs are socialized to the public
- all the costs associated with a bilingual society, vs single language
- increased mistrust of government
- showcase of lack of border security to all potential enemies
- increased environment & envirnmental resource stress
- undermined wages for our poorest citizens
- increased crime
- potential for out of control population growth
