I have 10,000 to spend but I don't know what I should focus on the most? Cut? Color? Carat? Clarity?

I know I want a round cut and buy at least 1 carat for an engagement ring but what is minimum Color or Clarity I should get?

I would go to this site:

www.thediamondguy.com

It spells out everything for you, including grading systems and how to spot a quality diamond. It even tells you what you should be paying for a specific diamond!
I actually won a diamond ring from the site through their adopt-a-diamond program! And Fred's book is the diamond bible!

Best of luck!

With $10,000 to spend, you don't need to be worrying about the minimum for any of the diamond qualities. The round or brilliant cut is far superior to the other cuts for 'sparkle'. The color would depend on your fiance's preference. You can easily get a full 1 carat flawless or near flawless round cut for the money you have allocated and from a reputable jeweler.

The best tip I could offer is to not buy just a tiny bit less than a full carat size, so either get 1 carat or 2 carats but not just a little bit less in either size as the difference in value is much less than you'd think for the tiny size difference.

Also, buy from an established jeweler rather than a discount jewelry chain. A certificate of authenticity that the store prints up for their customers really doesn't mean anything. You have to go to a trustworthy jeweler to be assured of quality.

Good luck!!

Clarity isnt always the most important despite what some may say. If you have a bad cut diamond no matter how perfectly clear it is it will not sparkel and reflect well. Most would say is you stick between a VS1 to a SI1 and a color range of DEF to GH you should be safe

My ring was just about $10,000 a little over a carat, E in color SI1 in clarity and it is flawless to the eye. Try Simayof if you happen to have one in your area or just go to their website.

If I had to rank them, I'd say Clarity is the most important. You want a diamond that is as flawless as possible.

Color is second most important because you don't want a diamond that looks yellow or cloudy. You want one that sparkles.

Cut is the third most important because you want to give your fiancee the shape of diamond she prefers. Some women don't like round cuts, some prefer princess cut while others prefer heart shaped diamonds. Every woman has their own unique style and it should be reflected in the ring you select.

Carat weight is the least important. I don't think that a giant diamond always looks flattering. Some women may disagree but I think that the quality of the diamond is far more important than the size of it...

Good luck! $10,000 should buy alot of bling!!!

I'm in the process of picking a ring out so I've been reading into this alot lately. I have to say that I used to think I wanted a huge rock before I read about the 4 C's. Now, I tend to want to focus more on the Color and Carity most , then cut and then carrots. I also think where the diamond is from should be taken into consideration aswell due to the conditions as to some diamonds get into the market. If you google "blue nile diamonds" it gives alot of info on all the c's and even lets you build rings and get prices of bands and diamonds. Hope this helps you out with your search...10,000 should get you a beautiful ring - congrats!!!

Thats a tough question to answer. $10,000 is a great amount to spend, congrats to you! I believe that people underestimate the cut of a diamond, cut does not just refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the proportion of the cutting itself. If a diamond is cut too deep, or shallow, it will not disberse light properly, and the symetry is important as well. I recommend going to a good jeweler (not a MALL jeweler) and ask to look at GIA graded stones, and take a look at what is called an IDEAL cut. If you have a JARED Jeweler in your area, they have beautiful diamonds, and the staff there is DCF diamond certified, to give you the best advice, and show you all of your options.

One thing to keep in mind with 10K to spend: buy a ring to fit her hand.

Granted, this is all personal taste, but with 10K, you could easily buy a stone that looks too big on her hand. You might think of getting a smaller center stone (.75 to 1.25ct depending on quality) and going with a three stone setting and an array of other stones along the band.

My advice is to look at a LOT of diamonds and compare them. They are all individual and some just have more "life" to them. My wife's stone still gets comments from jewelers and friends... 14 years after I first selected it. I spent a lot less than you, but that was back in the stone age (sorry).

Clarity- this shows if the diamond is clear or not you want one that is clear not one that has a cloudy appearence
