The movie was a fictionalized account of a true event.

The actual event was a well documented tragedy of human greed and egotism.

Personally, my grandmother was supposed to have traveled on the Titanic... but she missed the boat (literally) by less than an hour. Our family album still has her original passage document in it... things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm... if it wasn't for her procrastination, I wouldn't have been born.

A very sobering thought.

"Titanic" the movie was NOT a true story if that is your question. The sinking of the ship is historic, but the romance was fictional.
