I would go with Sukhothai - it is a little cleaner and the historic park sits off to itself outside of the city about 12 km or so.. they have guesthouses, and bicycles to rent to tool around the park..

It is a nice place to spend some relaxed time but you can also take in most of the attraction on a 2-3 hr bike ride.. of course, more and longer if you want..

And, yes, you can function there in English as there are tourists there every day - - of course, not 2% of the #'s of tourists you will see in CM.. - small and manageable..

Sukhothai and Ayutthaya historic sites are spread over quite an area. Lopburi has a small one though. I believe you will enjoy the other 2 more. There are more unique structures to be seen in Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.

You can write me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com if you want more info on them.

to me, Sukothai is the best out of your 3 choices.
the historical sites still very much intact unlike Ayuthaya which torn down by the war.
prepare to spend one full day at the site.

If you're interested in historic sites, these places are just for you. Otherwise there's not much to do. You also need to be good in Thai as not much people speak English in these places.
