Hi, there is no reson to fear this test. I have had many and all they do is put you to sleep and when you wake it is done. No after afects you may have some stomach discomfort but not always and it is mild.

If you are American, be happy, because there colonoscopy is performed under general anesthesia. So you won't feel a thing. Here in my country the damn thing is (almost) always done with the patient awake. Not funny. I've had it once and it was hell. No matter how hard I tried to concentrate on what I also could see on the monitor. My dad's had several colonoscopies, and he says that some have been real painful, but he's also had at least one time which did not hurt at all (maybe a superexcellent doctor that time...)

The colonoscopy itself is nothing, due to the fact that you get the happy drugs, you go into la-la land.

The crappy part (no pun intended) is the prep the day before. They will probably give you an option of what to take to clean you out and one is no better than the other. Make sure you have NO PLANS for the day before and be prepared with lots of toilet paper and those lovely wet wipes they sell in the toilet paper aisle might be beneficial. If there is a long distance from your bathroom to the living room is, just move your TV somewhere closer to the bathroom. With these preps, you get very little notice from your body that you need to visit the porcelain god.

You probably won't be able to eat anything after 6 and can't drink anything else after 9 or midnight (depending on when your procedure is the next day.

Have fun - they even give you pictures when it's over (only of the inside)
