I was thinking maybe I should just spend my time elsewhere on my short trip but I need the real story about the place.

Hi, the Doi Suthep Temple in Chiangmai is a revered temple for the Buddhists. Even the Thai Royal Family pays a trip there when they stay over in their palace near there. So the place is definitely not a tourist traps.

Possibly those who break the rules there are the tourists who do not know the correct conduct while visiting a holy place. Do read up on the dos and don'ts while visiting temples in Thailand, which will include correct dressing, footwear, body action in the prayer hall, meeting the monk, etc. I believe many foreigners do not bother to read up.

I had been there a couple of times and I need the help of my Thai friend to help me through the proper etiquette while I am there.

Temples are holy and sacred to the Thais, so none will want to break any rules.

You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com if you think that I am not correct.

I was there over the New Years weekend. Although many many tourists go there, I would not call it a "trap". There are no fees you have to pay to see the temple. It is a beautiful place to visit, but the masses of people do take away from that beauty a bit. I think the masses of tourists depends on the time of year you visit. High tourist season will have lots of people, low tourist season, not so many people.
Even with the masses of people I would recommend visiting Doi Suthep.

I would not call it a tourist "trap" as there is no admission fee - however, there are many many tourists.. It used to provide a nice view of the city as well, but mostly these days the smog is pretty bad and leaves the air "dusty" at best.. I have never seen anyone behave improperly there. It is a respected temple atop a mountain and it seems to be the "must" go to place for the legions of CM tourists...

I myself find that place to be rather beautiful and quiet - actually the most amazing place I've ever seen.
