I don't know if you are serious but the short answer is that Microsoft is making plenty of money with Windows and with the new version Vista they will surely make much more money.

The longer answer is that they cannot simply switch because the Windows operating system is completely different the Unix right down to the core (Unix = kernel vs. Windows = .dll's). Not even the programming languages are remotely similar. So, no, they will not invalidate all of the work they have put into the windows system, leave the large existing Windows application base, abandon their users, and admit that they are wrong.

Granted, the BIOS is outdated but Vista does support EFI, when PCs get around to it, Vista will be there. Vista boots and runs on a Mac, therefore it must support at least some features of EFI, supposition on my part.

And to you other guys, never mind the fact that Vista was built from the ground up. Oh yeah... dll's are more or less a thing of the past, the registry isn't the messed up monstrosity it once was and... the completely new code base that was taken from the Windows 2003 kernel. At it's basic core, Vista is Windows 2003 but it is far more advanced than that. Vista is as advanced as Mac OSX, anyone who says otherwise is a Mac user or just hasn't read about Vista.

Yes, Vista is visually appealing but it is built on entirely new code which is, again, based off Windows 2003. That being said, a vast majority of Windows XP programs won't run under Vista, examples:

AVG
ZoneAlarm
Diskeeper
Just about Every third party firewall I can think of*
Some games, though I haven't tested any games yet
XP drivers for the most part won't work under Vista though I got SOME working... but not all. My printer works, my X-Fi works, my wifi cards work and my graphics cards work, that's all I really care about

The reason for that... Vista is vastly different from XP right down to its core. Maybe do some research next time before stepping out on a limb like that.

Mac OSX is a fine operating system and all, but Macs run Vista faster than they run OSX, yeah... you won't hear that one from Apple. I already have Vista, I've had it for six days, and I've yet to experience issue one with it... it was a seamless experience, unlike XP which would give you at least some trouble right out of the box.

I like how Vista fixes some things for you without bothering you or nagging you to death about it. So until you have used Vista, I don't think I will listen to ANY of your advice. And yes, I use OSX though not as much because... I'm a gamer, I play games and what does OSX not do... that's right... play games.

The simple answer is NO. Bill gates does his own thing, no matter how inferior *coff zune coff*. The newest example of this is Vista. Visually appealing, but it is hardly as advanced as the current OS X 10.4. But when Leopard comes out, vista will be even farther behind. Still using BIOS instead of EFI, still using same crappy old insecure Kernel. Supporting that digital rights management crap, how can I put my DVD's on my hdd with that stopping me?

Vista is inferior to OS X in every way, and I think until MS has only 50% market share, against apple which I believe will gain 50% in the next 10 years if they keep this great stuff up. MS will never get on the UNIX band wagon. Bill doesn't have the gal. ^_^

They are designed for different purposes so there is no real comparison, although with the advent of the Internet they seem to be competitors. You should look up and understand what and where UNIX came from. Short answer is it was designed to be a multi-user network system, where as windows, and it's predecessor DOS where designed to be a single user system. Like it or not, your not ready for UNIX if you need to ask this question. Not that you can't learn, you just don't have the concept of how powerful it is.
