Pray for understanding prior to reading.

To read it is one thing, to leave it another. Pray and meditate. "Clean" your body and mind. (i mean try eating what you know is healthy for your body; and clear your mind of any harmful/angry/negative or otherwise "bad" thought) By cleaning your body you will fill better, and you will allow it to feel more subtle things. Regarding your mind try filling it with peaceful and loving thoughts for the people and the things around you. If someone wrongs you try and understand that there might be a reason unrelated to you that made him act that way, and forgive him. Try and "loose touch" with your little reality we have build for ourselves and see the bigger picture - the one where we have a real purpose, and not just live from one day to the other. Do all this while reading the word of God, and the try and see God in everything, and i do mean EVERYTHING, around you. (even your enemies, or an animal, or a plant, or even a rock) And remember to persevere. If not its better not to start this journey. It will not be easy and you will not find the answers you might seek the very next day, but put your trust in God, and one day you will see that there is a lot more to this world (and us humans) than most people think. The answers will come. We each have a different path, but in the end the truth we seek is the same. This is just a small idea of the things we can accomplish. I hope this might help you find your own way.

Get the most out of it by reading it by yourself. If there is something you don't understand---move on. In time, when you come back to it, you may get that understanding. Do not[!!!!] allow anyone else to tell you what a passage means. It may not mean the same to you.
For myself, I had to make a choice: do I live by the l live by the Old Testament or the New Testament. . .the Word made flesh. I choose the New!!! I'm always wary of those that skip all over the bible in proving their point on a subject. And beware of one-liners. You know, those that quote Chapter and verse (Matt 7:22 i.e.) Read the whole chapter! Decide for yourself what you think the Lord is trying to tell you!

There have already been some good answers- praying first is always helpful. There are also some practical books on the subject, one is called "30 Days to Understanding the Bible in 15 Minutes a Day" by Max Anders, and it is highly recommended.

I pray that God would bless you, and give you understanding, and that you might be a doer, and not just a hearer of the Word!

It doesn't matter what you believe in, but believe in it. If you want to get the most out of it, you must believe it. Pray for understanding and maybe the best advice is to take it for your own meaning. The Bible (probably any other Religious text) is open to interpretation, within reason, and it is basically guidelines on how God wants you to live. Be open to not understanding or not knowing everything, when you read the Bible, new things will always jump out at you. Let the Bible be your guidelines, not your savior, that's Gods job.

If you believe the bible is the Word of God then you will seriously read it and apply to your life all the things that you believe is true for you. However, don't assume that what you conclude is of more importance than someone else's take on what the bible is teaching. Respect others, but live your life as you feel you should according to your faith. Let others have their faith, which may not agree with yours. After all, if you can disagree on the meaning of a poem or what a deep movie you saw was all about, you will differ on biblical views as well. Love your neighbor. Disagree with them, but love them. When you love those who may not agree with you, you truly will be getting the most out of what God wants for you:)

If you are a Christian pray first, buy a good word for word translation, a solid book on biblical hermeneutics, a concordance Strong's or Young's, a bible dictionary and encyclopedia. As the text was written not to us but for us a solid understanding of the setting, language and historical era in which it was is important.

I found a translation that I use for study called The Message, adapted by Eugene H. Petterson. It costs about thirty dollars but I love how it's written. If I come across things I don't understand, I take them to my Pastor and he explains it. Definitely, though, start your study time with prayer and read where you won't be easily distracted. It takes discipline and dedication to read the Word of God.

I find that I get more from the word when I pray first and then get in a quiet place. I read and then listen as God's spirit interprets the word for me.

read it situationally. Each passage is insight to another person's life. Connect with the person and how they are thinking/feeling. Followed is God's advise/response to that action. Also connect to God's. Through this you will learn that the Bible is a handbook for excellent living. Through seeing God's intervention, will help you appreciate how much effort he put into loving and protecting you, and will therefore create a deep, connected relationship with Him. It will also help you relate to all humans, because we all have the same root to our emotions.

Read the Quran, Old testament or the Torah! you asked and I have told you!
when you have read these three books you can then read the New testament but this takes a life time and what ever you do don't let a Christian tell you nothing, they confuse and brainwash you into believing things you know makes no common sense!
