They are allowed to put up cameras in the public part of the restroom, but not the stalls. Thereason that they area allowed to do this in the public part of the restroom is there is not a expectaion of privacy in the public area of the restroom. However when you go behind the closed doors of that stall there is now an expectaion of privacy. So I think that your friend may be right, but not have all of her facts straight...

Really? Wow...that's pretty crazy. Why would they need cameras in the bathroom? Why don't they put them outside of the bathrooms? It's not like its a live feed and someone is just sitting there monitoring the activity on the camera. All it is probably is a camera recording things, and maybe they might review the tape at the end of the night. If that's the case, if a crime or any illegal activity is happening, they wouldn't be able to stop it in real time. It's just there to spy on people, and maybe if something happens, aid in investigation. But that's all after the fact. A camera on the outside would suffice. It's just silly really, I think they think it's okay because the cameras aren't in the stalls themselves, only outside the stalls. But that's still a pretty private area. I don't know if it's legal or not, but I don't think it's right.

I work Loss prevention in a retail store and camera's are not allowed in private places like bathrooms or dressing rooms . I don't think we want to see anyone naked going to the bathroom that is one disgusting and two it could be a terrible site.

There are three places where video surveillance equipment is NOT ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES: bathrooms, same sex changing rooms, and fitting rooms. The US Supreme Court has ruled that you have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in these three areas, and video surveillance is illegal.
Video surveillance equipment can legally be used in co-ed locker rooms since both sexes use the area.
I think your friend has her facts wrong.

It may depend on the place, however, I do not believe this to be legal unless perhaps there is notification that there are cameras there. I don't think this would fly in Texas.

This is definitely an invasion of privacy issue. It may very well be illegal. Check with a lawyer in your area.
