In middle school, our female gym teacher would always hang around when we'd change - even when we'd change for swimming - because her office was in our locker room. It never bothered any of us girls. People are so overly-paranoid about being naked anyway, as though nobody's ever seen a naked kid or a pair of boobs or a limp little wiener before, or changed their baby's diaper. Jeesh. She was married with two kids.

In elementary school, I don't see anything wrong with a female teacher supervising the boys, especially if they're prone to being rowdy or bratty or mean or off-task. It's sort of like mothers taking their young sons to the bathroom; I see nothing wrong with fathers taking their daughters to the bathroom, either. If one of the two has to piss, the parent can't leave the kid standing alone outside the bathroom, or make the kid use the toilet alone when s/he doesn't know how to wipe his/her a.ss yet. Anyway, a male teacher supervising little girls might be questionable, but not necessarily. The teacher's goal is to get the kids ready to go quick and get on to the gym lesson. If two young girls were tearing each other's hair out, preventing the uproar would be more important than the gender of the adult who intervened, whether or not there were other naked girls around.

Anyway, in middle school nowadays, I don't think it's appropriate or necessary for any teacher of the opposite sex to "supervise" his or her students changing. In the '70s, I guess everyone was slightly less body-phobic. I wish it would have stayed that way. Teaching dance to children has made me keenly aware of the body and sexuality fear instilled in Americans at a very young age.

We didn't change clothes in elementary school for pe. But, in middle school, the female coaches would walk through the locker room as we changed. And, the stereotype was true in our school, the female coaches (except one) were all lesbians.

It did happen to me once. Even though the female teacher was the only one supposed to go, this new male teacher once did go in by mistake, we all yelled and he was pretty embarrassed.

Yes, they were lesbians and lovers to boot. There were three of them. It was revolting. Later someone pressed charges. Because it went further than just watching.
