We were trying to determine whether someone was allergic to the wax coating on the outside, because his throat swells with hives whenever he eats apples, and she made a really good observation:
Why put wax on them anyway? Apples are fine without it.

They wax the apples to look shiny. But your friend could have an allergic reaction to apples because the fruit acid is concentrated in the peeling. This is what a doctor told a friend of mine.

I think it is to protect the skin and to make it look more appealing...an all organic apple should be find for your friend to eat, or better yet, go to an apple orchard and spend the day picking apples, it would be lots of fun!

People are more apt to buy (and pay more) for a nice red or green apple then a multi colored apple (red brown-green brown).
I even herd that is helps longevity....of the apple not the person eating it.

Most stores & retailers coat fruits with wax to keep them from deteriorating (To keep them fresh longer) and to ward off flies and other pests.

apples keep in storage mutch better when coated with a film of harmless wax. if you eat choclate candy one choclate bar has more wax in it than a bushel of apples has on it.wax aproved by the fda is harmless
