wow! does it hurt...of course...im sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the first time you get them placed on your teeth it will be hell in your mouth for at least a few days to 2 weeks you should stick to bread and soups...dont eat pizza...for the first week eat EXTRA soft foods after that you can start eating some softer things...dependig on when the pain starts easeing up in your mouth...when i got mine on i wanted to scream and bawl at how bad it hurt...I AM SO SORRY you have to hear this before you get braces on...then every time you go in to the ortho to get the wire changed each visit begins to hurt your mouth less and less because your getting used to the constant tightening...i got mine tightened the next day i couldnt feel any pain...just be glad that after they are already on the pain will get less and less so you wont have to experience it al over again every time you go to the ortho...oh and by the way if you like gum i suggest cutting back...no gum allowed while wearing braces...yeah i was devastated...and if you dont listen a peice of gum will stick in the bracket or pull out something...like mine... and i have some more advice...avoid getting hit in the mouth with doors...it breaks the brackets...and dont eat nuts or hard candy....yeah that stuff is not allowed while wearing those stupid metal things! what else...i think thats it...anyways if you need anything just let me know somehow! good luck with those braces....

I hate those days unfortunately lol, but once you have them on, you'll feel the pain and the discomfort for a few days, so take Tylenol or other pain relievers if you really, really, really can't handle it for one day. Anyway depending on how the original formation of your teeth was (overbite, underbite, etc.), you might wear those special rubber bands stretching from the top tooth to the corresponding bottom one, and those things are a pain in the @%&. So while your teeth hurt, in terms of eating, what I ate during those painful days was that I ate any mushy things like mashed potatoes, applesauce, yogurt (w/o the fruit in it) that don't require biting and chewing at all, AND take vitamin and mineral supplements (the ones you only swallow of course) to meet nutritional needs. AVOID gum and any gooey stuff like that, the "remainings" are very tedious to remove. Also, unless you do want to show off your teeth, avoid colored elastics and get clear elastics since they're barely noticeable. And because you can't really floss, realistically the best way for this is to use mouth washers like Listerine. Once you are used to them, the pain becomes less intense. And finally don't worry, it's really worth having the braces to give you a great smile in the end =D.

They will hurt up to 5 days after you get them. Your lips might bleed or get pretty sore for the few hours but if you use the wax they give you it's not bad. Eating is hard, live off mashed potatoes, soup, ice cream, etc. for the first few days. Don't try chewing gum or anything hard like that, it will be unbearable. Don't get red braces, it looks like your mouth is bleeding. Also ixnay on yellow, white and clear. I found that light blue looks cute but just pick colors that you think would look cute. Your teeth will move a lot, take lots of Ibuprofen and other stuff. Good luck!

Braces do hurt at first, but they don't forever! They can take anywhere between one and three years depending on how your teeth are at the start and what your goals are. If you are getting traditional braces, go for white elastic ligatures (the rubber bands on each tooth) and it'll be less noticeable.

If the doctor gives you wax to cover the wire before callouses form, be wary of it (I never found any use for it, and when I did have a problem it was usually because the orthodontist should have trimmed the wire at the back of my mouth closer).

Good luck and stick with it, the results will be worth it!

it only hurts about a couple of hours after you get them unless you take Motrin. It really helps. Make sure you do not get a light color because whatever you eat that day they will be that color. It doesnt look pretty!!!! And make sure you feel your teeth before you get them because that will be the last time for a long time you will be able to feel the smoothness.
