I do this....for me it's because I'm left-handed and it feels more natural. The beauty of being an artist is you really don't have to conform to ANY standards.

Well, I'm also left-handed but don't always sign my name on the left side of the canvas. What I do whenever possible is paint the signature into the painting, slightly obscuring it to the point where it won't detract from the flow of the painting. In other words, make it or place it where actually doesn't take much away from the painting.

(Look at this painting as an example. My signature is painted into the podium in the far left corner. You actually have to look for it to find it.

In this painting it's on the right hand side, painted into the stone wall.

See what I mean?)

However, I have done some abstracts where you really can't incorporate the signature into the painting and the name is there and obvious to the eye.

What I suppose I'm saying is that there really is a standard formula for artists to follow.

It's just personal preference. Personally I never sign on the painting itself. I'll just sign the back of the canvas. I find signatures distracting, and a bit egotistical.

They're possibly left-handed. I sign everything on the left side of the page, as opposed to signing on the right side, and smudging something. (I'm a lefty).

it just depends on the person. Mostly I sign in the bottom left but sometimes I switch because there might be something important in the corner I don't want to cover it up.

its simple! if you're left-handed you tend to write on the left side and vice-versa.
