Why are small appliances not built to last, anymore? It seems they are made cheaper then ever before. It almost like you don't want to buy something with all the bells and whistles on it because it's just more parts that could break. Also, it seems that as soon as the limited warranty is over, so is the appliance. It's almost like they have it timed just right. Any comments????

Our throw away society has spread to throw away appliances as well, you've nailed it. It used to be that a companies reputation of durability was valued and prized above all else. But with the advent of publicly traded companies needing to be profitable for the shareholders greater sales and lower price became the expectation. More and more items are manurfactured overseas where the labor and some raw components are cheap. In this day and age its rare to see a real comprehensive warranty of any duration the products that do are of necessity higher priced. You definitely get what you pay for, but thanks to the Wal Mart mentality we get alot of cheap stuff cheap.

Appliances have become very inexpensive. Ask a grandparent what a toaster cost them, and what year they bought it, and find an on-line currency/inflation converter to figure out what that meant in real money. The prices for TV sets and other electronic goods have dropped several percent per year for the last twenty years.

It is possible that you, or someone you live with, is simply hard on stuff. Any repairman will tell you the stories: items that come into the shop with burns, cracked cases, torn-off wires, and stories of innocence. None of this has much to do with the quality of the items.

Yeah, I agree. My grandfather leant me a fan of his grandfather's when I was in University to cool my apartment. The thing was AMAZING! It cooled the whole room and barely made a sound. It was solid steel and wonderful. When I moved I gave it back, and bought my own fan which was noisy and didn't work, though it was twice the size. I think that we need to get our heads on straight. My lesson from that was to buy well made products. So, I have to save for 4 times as long to get something, but as the previous answerer said, "You want CHEAP you get CHEAP"
